Ajoba wanted her to be raised close to nature. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, away from readymade routines. “Children sparkle in the lap of nature — amidst vales, rivulets and crickets,” he had shared in one of his letters. Named after his favourite Tagore character, Chitrangada, she felt pressured to become someone she was not. “I…I think…ummm, errr…” — there was a languid pause. The voice of a 7th grader was breaking off as she stood shaking in front of the mic. All of a sudden her mind went completely blank as she stared at the chit of paper that had her impromptu topic written on it — “Sharing is Caring”. It was her first extempore competition and the entire school watched. They watched her with eyes of contemplation and anticipation, she had never failed them or anyone or herself when it came to speeches and debates. Because she had a natural way with words, she had been voted by the class for this one too. She did not see this coming. The crowd was bigger than ever — is that why she had zoned out?
